Continuation Bets
Continuation bets are something I use a lot when play poker. They are just one of the pieces of strategy that I have found really fits my game. Every poker player who wants to win consistently should utilize the continuation at least every so often. This is so that you are not cheated out of your preflop bets on a consistent basis. In this article I will briefly go over what a continuation bet is, the advantages to using a continuation bet, and when you should consider using it.
A continuation bet is essentially just a continuation of aggressive play. There’s a large percentage of the time when you are going to raise pre flop only to see that nothing has come of it. In most cases, if you are being pressured it would be a good idea to lay the hand down. But, if you lay down every hand such as this you are going to be putting yourself in a losing position. I use it more often than a lot of other players, but you are going to want to use the continuation bet at least some of the time..
What you want to do is continue to raise even though you don’t have a good hand, or you didn’t catch anything on the flop. This will lead players to believe that you benefited from the flop and are still in a strong position. They will approach you with caution now and you are in a great position to steal the pot. You can also carry this momentum throughout the rest of the game. If you keep making aggressive bets players are going to have to assume that you have a great hand, especially if they aren’t familiar with your play.
The idea is to make a bet large enough so that players who would normally just be in the hand to try and see some free cards will fold but not so large that you will be in a really bad position if a player comes back and makes a big raise on you. You want the bet to be small enough so that you can throw this hand away if need me.
To me, a continuation bet is a great way to stay in control through being aggressive. I’m a pretty aggressive player because I feel like I am more in control of the when I’m the one making the raises and not being raised. You don’t have to use this move all the time but I would definitely suggest using it at least every once in a while.
